What is an Audiobook?
An audiobook is a recorded reading of a book. They are usually read by a professional voice actor. Audiobooks can be bought as CDs or downloaded from the internet as MP3 files.
Most public libraries in the United States have a section devoted to audiobooks. These books can be checked out and downloaded to a digital player just like regular books.
Why Audiobooks?
Audiobooks are a great way to “read” a book when you are driving, exercising, or doing other activities where you can’t hold a book.
Some people prefer to listen to audiobooks rather than read them because they can follow along more easily, or because they can listen to them at a faster speed than they can read.
Some people listen to audiobooks because they have vision problems or other conditions that make reading difficult.
Getting Started
You can find audiobooks in a few different places:
The library – Most public libraries have a section devoted to audiobooks. These books can be checked out and downloaded to a digital player just like regular books.
Audiobookstores – There are a few online stores that specializes in audiobooks, such as Audible.com and iTunes.
The author’s website – Sometimes authors will sell audiobooks directly from their own website.
How to Make an Audiobook
If you want to make your own audiobook, you can use a text-to-speech program to read the book aloud. This can be a time-consuming process, but it is relatively easy to do.
To create an audiobook, you will need:
A text-to-speech program – There are a few different programs that can be used for this, such as Escadata Text to Speech Converter. These programs are available for purchase, or you can get a free trial.
A digital recording device – This can be a simple microphone that plugs into your computer’s USB port, or a more sophisticated digital recorder.
Audacity (optional) – This is a free program that can be used to edit the audio files.
Once you have all of the necessary equipment, you can begin the process of creating your audiobook.
1. Open the text-to-speech program and load the book file.
2. Select the voice that you want to use.
3. Adjust the reading speed, if desired.
4. Begin recording.
5. Stop the recording when you reach the end of the chapter or section.
6. Repeat steps 4-5 until the entire book has been recorded.
7. Edit the audio files, if desired.
8. Save the file in MP3 format.
That’s all there is to it! With a little bit of time and effort, you can easily create your own audiobook.
